Preparation of Samples for Analysis of Stable Isotopes

isotopos

Paleodiet: Preparation of the inorganic fraction from animal (including human) bone remains for the C13 analysis. Collagen samples from the mammal (including human) bones are obtained for the C13 and N15 analyses. The stable isotope analyses are carried out in collaboration with the Archaeozoology Laboratory (“Laboratorio de Arqueozoología”) at the Madrid Autonomous University (“Universidad Autónoma de Madrid”), Spain.

Paleotemperature: Preparation of the inorganic fraction from remains of otolites and mollusc shells for the O18 analyses. The analyses of such isotope are carried out in collaboration with the Archaeozoology Laboratory previously indicated, calibrating the obtained data with the sea basin corresponding to the sample origin.

Studies of Ancient DNA

s10

Ancient DNA studies from plants of archaeological origin. In some special cases, studies of ADNA from animal (including human) remain are carried out, in collaboration with the Molecular Identification Laboratory (“Laboratorio de Identificación Molecular”) of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (“Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales”) of Madrid, Spain.

Microchemical Studies by EDAX Sounders

s8

These analyses are carried out with metals, soils, pigments and any inorganic materials of archaeological origin. Additionally, scanning microscopy pictures are also delivered.

Flotation

s9

Mechanical and chemical buoyancy. Recovery of botanical and faunistic remains by mechanical and chemical flotation and subsequent archaeobotanical or archaeozoological study.

Studies of Archaeological Soils

s7

Physical: Organoleptic characteristics, pH, electric conductivity, sedimentology, temperature.

Chemical:

_Carbonates: To observe labors related to lime elaboration, mollusc shell deposits, stucco deposits and preparation of some foods related with this substance.

_Phosphates: The phosphate remains accumulations may provide an importance evidence of phosphorous-rich organic activity (useful to determine the areas of domestic activity).

_Others: Silicate, organic matter, humus percentage, etc.
